Keynote Speaker Chanel Miller to Headline Center for Community Solutions’ 21st Tea & Tonic

Center for Community Solutions (CCS), the leading non-profit agency that offers a complete range of sexual assault, intimate partner violence, and stalking prevention and intervention services in San Diego County, will host the 21st Tea & Tonic at THE US GRANT on April 30, 2020, from 1 to 3:30 PM, followed by a VIP reception at 3:30 PM. The annual event, held during Sexual Assault Awareness Month, will celebrate a community of volunteers who are dedicated to supporting survivors and ending sexual and intimate partner violence.

This year’s keynote speaker is Chanel Miller—who was previously known to the world only as Emily Doe. Miller will speak to the CCS community about her transformation from a sexual assault survivor to advocate. Having faced her perpetrator in the criminal justice system in a case that made international headlines, she authored a powerful victim statement that went viral further shedding light on the challenges faced by sexual assault survivors. Her book, “Know My Name,” shares her story of sexual assault and spotlights the culture and criminal justice system biased toward perpetrators. Miller’s story encourages survivors to harness the power of words and speak their truth.

“We are humbled and honored to have Ms. Miller share her experience with our community of supporters,” said Verna Griffin-Tabor, CEO of Center for Community Solutions. “She was the faceless victim of one of the most pivotal sexual assault cases of our time that unearthed unimaginable prejudice in our criminal justice system. Her bravery in stepping forward and publically addressing her perpetrator helped to reshape the dialogue about how these cases are prosecuted in this country.”

Net proceeds from Tea & Tonic will be used toward CCS’ full range of crisis intervention programs, including a 24-hour crisis hotline, emergency shelters, victim advocacy, court accompaniment, hospital accompaniment during forensic exams, counseling services, and legal services. These much-needed funds will provide survivors of intimate partner violence and sexual assault with the hope and healing they deserve.

Tea & Tonic Sponsors to date include Chemistry PR, Cool-jams, The Frame Maker, Ranch & Coast Magazine, Redhorse Corporation, Union Bank, Verizon Wireless and many generous individuals.
